If there is one common touch stone among PJ's many albums, it's Ed's love of the ocean. Pretty much every album has a song that references them. So, their newest video for "Amongst The Waves" is a live version of the cut, spliced with live footage, surfing... and waves. You can buy the video and the proceeds go to Conservation International's Marine Programs.

About Last Night... Pearl Jam

The long cold winter of my Pearl Jam discontent was finally over on Monday night as the last of the international grunge boys made their way to Kansas City.

The set meandered through all eras of their music and started off strong with one of my favorite songs, "Of The Girl," from Binaural and continued with "Animal" and "World Wide Suicide." However, for me the show bogged down a little bit with their newer material. "Unknown Thought," "Among The Waves" and "Johnny Guitar" don't have the rockin' sting the band once carried. It probably springs from the fact that as the band approaches their 50's (yes, fifties) they just aren't as pissed off as they once were in their twenties... and the newer songs show as much as they may still have the same opinions and feelings they should be shaking their fists instead of yelling.

But, here's the rub... the songs through 2003's Riot Act, even 2007's self-titled album still have all the piss-and-vinegar they once did and still hold the same emotion.

That being said, they are still, and will probably continue to be one of the most entertaining live acts that are on the road.

Halloween Hijinx With Pearl Jam

If you're a fan of the Pearl Jam, you know there are certain things to expect at their shows.

1) They are probably not going to play "Leash"... even if you call them pussies.
2)They probably aren't going to play "Bugs" and they probably they aren't going to play "Sweet Lew" either, because they've never played either of them live.
3) If it's Halloween, they will more than likely dress up, you know, 'cause it's fun!

The fans in Illedelphia got a treat on Halloween as they played "Bugs," "Sweet Lew" and dressed up as Devo and covered "Whip It," all of this on top of a 40 song set. Pretty good for rock dinosaurs who don't mean much any more, right?

Temple of The Dog Reunion

It was a reunion... for one song. But, since it was at a Pearl Jam show that really only makes sense. Chris Cornell joined Ed for the vocal duties on "Hunger Strike" for a show last night out in L.A. Oh, and just as a side note, Chrissy can still hit the high notes... he just makes bad album decisions.

PJ's Feelin' Supersonic, Give Them Gin And Tonic

Tomorrow my brother is heading the Golden State to hang out with all those California kids at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. Sure, it's a trip to the bay, but, Pearl Jam are headlining. I know, I KNOW... how much Pearl Jam can I talk about? A lot.

But, their newest track, "Supersonic," has hit the internets, so, have a listen. Oh, and enjoy.

"The Fixer" Gets Crowe'd

I think we all know that here at BFD we're decidedly steadfast in our undying love of the thunder from the great Northwest that is Pearl Jam.

Their old sentimental friend Cameron Crowe directed their video for "The Fixer" from the upcoming Backspacer. I'm excited to hear the new material, because, believe it or not, the songs I've heard from the new album don't sound like what they've done before. It's fresh sound from the last great band of my era.

It's a live recording from their show at London's Shepard's Bush Empire. Hearing this and "The Fixer" are making me really want to hear the new album after the mostly dud of the Avacado album.

Get Yer Fixer

PJ's new single "The Fixer" from forthcoming album Backspacer is out now and I'm glad to hear it. Their last album... meh... I wasn't to hot on it. It had a few good songs and that was about it. "The Fixer" is sweet relief from music that was overwrought with political subject matter. It's nice to hear them just rock out again without an agenda behind it.

Christmas In May

Yesterday I got an unlikely surprise in the mail--my Pearl Jam 2008 Christmas single! Yeah, I know, Christmas was six months ago. But, after the first year or two in the fan club you realize that Christmas comes late every year. I also got the Summer issue of Deep which is a special edition focusing on the Ten 20th aniversary... which is next year. Man I feel old.

But, the single has an alternate take on John Doe's "Golden State." Ed's original version was featured on the Golden State EP, but this one is a stripped down version. Also included is a new song called "Santa Cruz," it sounds like Ed reminiscing about the good ol' days in California when he was working at a gas station and surfing.

Pearl Jam Movie?

Mike McCready said during a radio interview that Cameron Crowe is going to make a movie about his band Pearl Jam.  Sweet.  I have the rest of their DVDs so I will totally be down with this one.  It's suppose to be a documentary type thing, which I personally love as long is everyone is open and talkative.  It would be even better if it were four hours like the Tom Petty movie that came out a few years ago.  Since they are reportedly headlining ACL this year, hopefully they will stop through The D... I would think they would, right?

Oh, and he said their new album should be out by the end of the year.  And now a goodie from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from when The Doors were inducted.

ACL 2009 Festival Rumors

It's getting close to that time of year again, can you smell it in the air?  Yep, early tickets for the 2009 Austin City Limits Festival go on sale in just over a week, April 7.  The rumors for headliners are flying around like Vin Diesel, fast and furious.

Austin 360 is reporting that Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys and Dave Matthews have "all but confirmed" as headliners this year.  If the part about PJ is true, I personally called it a few months ago.  I didn't tell anyone really, but, I figured with the re-release of Ten and a new album in the works they would prolly go down Austin way.  The gooder news is that since they might be heading to Austin they will prolly come through The D as well.

Oh, and the festival has been moved back to the first week in October, so it won't be as hot as it usually is.

Under The Cover

This cover is pretty damn interesting.  The Pearl Jam is one my favorite all-time bands and I'm pretty unimpressed with cover versions of their songs and I haven't really heard that many that are good.  So, when I saw this I just rolled my eyes because I figured it would suck too.  But, P.O.S. from the Twin City of Minneapolis puts a nice hip-hop touch on the classic PJ deep cut "Why Go?"

I have to go on record and just say that I don't actually hate this version.  I don't know that I'll be bumpin' it in my truck, but it doesn't suck.

Have I Got a Little Story For You

Dag, yo!  I wish I wasn't in such a pinch right now or I'd totally order the super deluxe edition of the upcoming reissue of the Pearl Jam classic Ten.  I've said it before, I'll say it again and again...huge PJ fan here, peeps.

Among the many things you will get if you buy it:  DVD release of their MTV Unplugged, four albums, remastered CD's,  and unreleased show from September 20, 1992, concert at Seattle's Magnuson Park (dubbed Drop in the Park) and a bunch of other stuff too.  Check it all out here or order it here.

But, the best part is there are going to be four unreleased songs that accompany the package.  Breath" and "State of Love and Trust," (which were on the Singles soundtrack) "Brother" (with vocals, not the instrumental version from the 2003 rarities collection "Lost Dogs"), "Just a Girl," "Evil Little Goat" and "2,000 Mile Blues," a Stevie Ray Vaughan-inspired jam with improvised vocals from frontman Eddie Vedder.  Should be sweet!

New EdVed and Corin

I believe I have stated this a couple of times now, but, I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan.  That being said, I'm really diggin' the direction the Ed has been going in the last couple of years with his solo material.  The Into The Wild soundtrack was completely different from about 99% of what Pearl Jam has done.  

To that point, Ed has been joined by former PJ opener and Sleater-Kinney alum Corin Tucker to cover John Doe's "The Golden State" for his release of Golden State EP.  I've listened to this lil' number a few times now and it gets better with each listen. (Pitchfork)
