About Last Night... BFD Showcase

Saturday night was a good night for local music. We were fortunate enough to have a great turn out for our first showcase.

First up was Ronnie Fauss, the husky voiced troubadour armed with only his guitar and harmonica he showed off his singer-songwriter chops to a crowd. He moved through works from his two albums and EP with stunning results. Hopefully people were paying enough attention to tell their friends about him or check him out online. But, he's going to be playing with Danny Balis in the next month or two... so hopefully that will be a bump in his profile.

Elkhart opened up their set with their fantastic take on Radiohead's "House of Cards," a favorite of mine. It's always nice to see Elkhart in such an intimate setting, because really, that is where the group excels with their personal, heartfelt take on americana.

Lastly, the great Bosque Brown rounded out the bill with a full band, which was really nice to see. Mara Lee Miller, has one of the most amazing voices you will ever hear. For my money, the only other woman on her level, at least locally, is Sarah Jaffe.

All-in-all, it was a great night... thanks to everyone who came out.

Bona Fide Darling Showcase!

Hello, kids! I'm happy to announce that we are having our first music showcase at City Tavern on January, 2.

Know, New Years Day gives you plenty of time to sleep off that hangover... or catch up on some sleep. We were lucky enough to get a really strong line-up for what hopefully will be a long line of shows. Ronnie Fauss will start things off, followed by the excellent Elkhart and Bosque Brown will be the evening's main attraction.

Cover is only $5, so, with some rest and cheap cover you really have no reason not to check the show out!

Where There's Smoke, There's Bosque?

So, I haven't been able to get a confirmation from Smoke, but, Bosque Brown's Myspace page says they're playing there tomorrow night. It should start at 10p and also be super great. I've been waiting for them to play in town again, since I missed them a few weeks ago.

So, maybe I'll see you there? 10p. Smoke.

Also, check out some vidies of Mara Lee singing in what looks to be a French cathedral of some sort. I can only assume it French, since all the copy for the website is in French.

KERA Loves Them Some Bosque Brown

I'm glad I checked out Fine Line Live today, Cindy hipped me to the a podcast on KERA's website with Mara Lee Miller of Bosque Brown as he goes track by track talking about her band's newest album Baby.  I usually like to come up with my own interpretations of what the songs are about, but it's cool to hear Mara Lee talk about her album.  It's interesting how we both had the same feelings about our hometowns.  We couldn't wait to get the hell out of there, but we love going back home.

I really can't go on enough about Baby, it's an absolutely fantastic album and you need to get it now!  You can listen to the podcast here.

The Bosque At The Good Records

I went to the Bosque Brown's in-store appearance at Good Records yesterday and...it's was greatness.  I was in awe of Mara Lee Miller's voice is in a live setting, it sound just as great or better as it does on their record.  She and her sister/keyboard player sound wonderful when they harmonize.

It was great to hear "Train Song" live, it's my favorite song on the record, I thought it sounded better live than on the CD.  But, their whole performance was great.

you can see the our pics from the show here.

What I'm Seeing, What I'm Missing

Tonight I'm reviewing Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon vs. Dr. Dooom show for DC9 at Night.  So, that means I'm going to miss the Eastwood acoustico show at Opening Bell the Lakewood Bar & Grill.  But, just because I'm not going just doesn't mean you shouldn't go.

Tomorrow I'm going to catch the Bosque Brown in-store at Good Records.  I love the Good Records and their in-store shows.  And, this will be the first chance I get to see them/her, so gotta do it.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to see Elkhart, Dove Hunter, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears or Telegraph Canyon tomorrow night at the House of Snooze.  Damn birthday parties!

But, that should be a great show, $10 for ten bands...can't beat that with a stick.

Bosque Brown Baby

It's hard to compare Bosque Brown to any other band or musician.  Her musical sound is spare and slightly haunting in the tradition of old mountains.  Her voice is similar to Chan Marshall, er, Cat Power--but, the tone of her music has more in common with Gillian Welch.  Her friend Damien Jurado said she's Kitty Wells heartache mixed with Robert Johnson's howl.  And honestly I don't think the comparison is far fetched.

Her music teeters on the edge of dour mood music and twangy upbeat songs.  The album builds slowly and beautifully from the moody "White Dove" to the sublime "Train Song" and spiced up in between with the acappella gospel of "On and Off Pt. 1, 2 & 3."  While her songs can be seen as somewhat sad, like "Went Walking," there is a cheer in her voice as the album continues in songs like "Train Song."  The latter song is one of the more upbeat songs on Baby and reflects the sweetness in her voice and is one of my favorites on the album.

Upcoming shows:

3/1/09 @ Dan's Silverleaf - Denton, TX
3/7/09 @ Good Records (in-store) - Dallas, TX
3/20/09 @ SXSW - Austin, TX

Her album Baby will be out on March 3 and you can get it here.

Bosque Brown "Went Walking"

Dentonite Bosque Brown will release her new album, Baby, on March 3.  I'm new to the sweetness of the Bosque Brown, but, I do like what I hear.  Her folky, country-blues tinged torch songs are covered in sweetness and expresses experience beyond her years.
