Used Strings Make Good Things
In an interesting twist on supporting local music and the Carter Albrect Music Foundation, Eye On The Sparrow Design's has come up with an interesting way to help you look good and help out a good cause.
Eye On The Sparrow Designs takes used bass and guitar strings from local musicians and turns them into bracelets and earrings. 25% of all sales go to the Carter Albrect Music Foundation. So, if you're a musician, please donate to the cause (you don't need old strings anyway, right?). Or, just go to the website and check out the pieces and purchase something.

Saturday Fun Times
Saturday night me and the Mrs. went out to see The Atoms/Eastwood/100 Damned Guns show at the City Tavern. It was the first time I'd been to City Tavern and I like the place.
The Atoms were a pretty good band, they had the rock swagger with a bit o' Southern twang thrown in. But, the night really belonged to Eastwood and 100 Damned Guns. During the Eastwood set they busted out a sweet gem from my youth, they covered Eddie Rabbit's "Drivin' My Life Away." I was super stoked to hear that one, hadn't heard it in a loooong time.
100 Damned Guns were great as always. I think I overheard the manager telling one of the band members the owner really liked them and wanted them to come back and play. Good for them. The Guns closed out their set with a sweet Waylon cover of "Good Hearted Woman" which I always dedicate to my wife.
But, the most entertaining thing of the night was the guy in the above video. I kinda feel sorry for him, but I kinda don't. You see, he was obviously very intoxicated and just having a good time. But, it was fun to see someone that drunk and having a good time. But, it was also just really, really funny to see this guy doin' whatever he was doing.

What I'm Seeing, What I'm Missing
Tonight I'm reviewing Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon vs. Dr. Dooom show for DC9 at Night. So, that means I'm going to miss the Eastwood acoustico show at Opening Bell the Lakewood Bar & Grill. But, just because I'm not going just doesn't mean you shouldn't go.

Tomorrow I'm going to catch the Bosque Brown in-store at Good Records. I love the Good Records and their in-store shows. And, this will be the first chance I get to see them/her, so gotta do it. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see Elkhart, Dove Hunter, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears or Telegraph Canyon tomorrow night at the House of Snooze. Damn birthday parties!
But, that should be a great show, $10 for ten bands...can't beat that with a stick.

Travis Hopper Covers Eastwood
Mr. Travis Hopper, he of Elkhart and solo fame, has done a nice little cover of Eastwood's "Breathe." I really dig the pickin' he did on the geetar and his take on this song gives it new tone.

Yeah, They Local
So, I've been diggin' the hell out of the new Eastwood album, Everythings Personal. It's an album that combines the many elements of the band. Their sound can't really be described very easily, a little rock, a little country and little pit of pop sensibility and a dash of that sweet Bluegrass sound. Songs like "Givin' Up, Givin' In" has the countryfied-pop sound that is very reminiscent of The Eagles.
Their sound is approachable and very easy to get hooked into. The stand out track on Everythings Personal is "Right Place, Wrong Time." It's a situation a lot of couples find themselves in with the person they are in a relationship with. 'I love you, I really do. But, I really hate putting up with your shit. We've had this talk 100 times, remember?' If you have any questions about the tone of this song, just listen to that sweet, sweet steal guitar and you'll know this song was meant for lookin' back. Or forward, just depends on which side of the relationship your on.
Another stand out track is "They'll Never Take Me Alive," a nice little rocked up tracked about breakin' out of the hooskow and, well, they ain't gonna take him back alive. And, then there's "Natalie"--the I'm sorry for cheatin' on you song that is actually sweet and makes you want to forgive the guy for doin' 'er wrong.
Yep, Eastwood carries on the strong Dallas tradition in the Americana, Alt-Country and Roots-Rock that sounds just a great in the car as it does on stage. Whether they make music a full-time career or just for shits and giggles Eastwood are a damned good band.

Elkhart, Jason Bales and Eastwood
So, last night I took myself down to Club Dada to check out what turned out to be a great night of music. Well, except for the very first band. I never got their name and apparently the singer never got singing lessons. Dude, you got heart, I give you that. But, next time you might want to bring a bucket with you to carry a tune in. But, I digress.
The second band was Elkhart and I was impressed right away by their live set. They have the Americana rootsy vibe without the typical voice associated with it. Travis Hopper is a good singer, his voice reminds me of an Roots/Americana version of Thom Yorke, except Travis doesn't have a crazy eye. That being said, I was totally blown away by their version of Radiohead's "House of Cards." I've been checking out their album The Moon today and it's quite tasty.

Last night was my first exposure to Mr. Jason Bales and I was more than impressed with this guy. He's got a rockin' set that to me was a mix of Red Dirt and Texas Country. I could be way off base, but, that's the way it hit me. I will definitely get more music from Mr. Bales and check out his live set again. His set was pretty rockin' last night.

But, the headliners of the night were Eastwood--the tallest band in Dallas music. I got to hang out with the guys a little before the show and I've never felt so short in my life! Kevin has to be at least 6'9". Their set was as good live as it is on record. For guys who hold down day jobs and get their rock and roll jollies out on the weekend they are blessed with a lot of talent. I can't wait to check out their show at the Barley House next month.

Eastwood Tomorrow
When I hear the name Eastwood I automatically think of two things: Clint and Snoop Dogg. I only think of Snoop because of when he called himself "Snoop Eastwood" on "Deep Cover." So, there that is.
Anyhoo, they are playing a show tomorrow night at Barley House for Kevin Minihan's birthday. You can read the article I wrote about it on DC9 that gives all the details and a mp3 from their newest ready to be released album Everything's Personal.
By the way: Kevin, sorry for misspelling your name. I'm kinda dumb sometimes.
Oh, and stay tuned for more on Eastwood because I'll feature them on "Yeah, They Local" in the very near future.
