Axl Has Skills

I don't usually bring you the gossip, or the Gossip, but this time it's just like Salt-n-Pepa--very necessary!

It seems that W. Axl Rose was laying it on thick trying to pick up Kelly Osbourne. He was allegedely overheard by former Michael Alig cronie come fashion designer Richie Rich saying:

"He kept leering at her and saying, "I want to fuck you!"
Dude, I though I had skills with the ladies. But, honestly, that takes the cake! But, I have to give it to him, at least Kelly is looking much better than she did when she was on The Osbournes. She looks really good now. (The Superficial via OK!)

TVOTR "Dancing Choose"

Meh, the new stuff isn't starting out so good. Maybe I just need to give it a few more spins. What do you think?

Kings of Leon "Sex on Fire" Vidie

This video reminds me a lot of REM's "Losing My Religion." The tone, use of imagery and atmosphere are very similar. I'm a little disappointed in the video. I thought the video would be a little more upbeat to match the feel of the song. But, maybe I'm the one who's wrong. I still love the song though.

Douchbaggery

Whether it be music, people or politics I like to think of myself as an open minded person. But, then I read things like the vapid douchebaggery of the above no talent ass clown and it really pisses me off.

I live in Dallas, but I'm a born and bred Okie. There are many things I love about my home state and our music history is the biggest. Sure, I'm not fans of Toby Keith, but millions are and it's something to be proud of. Then there are the Flaming Lips, a band I can get behind and love for all their lovely eccentricities.

But, then you get a band like Hinder and I can't really follow you there on any level. I believe Cock Rock has it's place in music like anything else. But, when it's done a poor fashion like the guys in Hinder I can't really get behind it. Guns n Roses? Sure, I could listen to Appetite all day and all night! Motley Crue? Sure, they gots some good tunes. Hinder? Not so much.

But, this isn't really about their music. It's about their drummer. He reminds me of the thick headed, slack jawed doofuses I grew up with. The ones who couldn't handle their own problems and had to bring their buddies to help them in a fight. The guy in the picture is Cody Hanson, drummer of the afore mentioned band Hinder. He went to have "words" with the editor of the Oklahoma Gazette about some unkind words written about him in the OKG.

What exactly was said you ask? Ummmm...how about the fact that Hanson didn't even drum on Hinder's debut album, even though he was in the band, he let a session drummer do it. Then he gets mad because he gets called out for it! Your going to get mad about getting called out for your lack of musical talent, really? Your bandmate even confirmed you didn't drum on your bands album...why not get mad at him? What a douche move. Even doucheyer was the fact he brought his boys with him for intimidation.

I just really can't get behind a band, even from my native state, that can't even play their own instruments. It's sad and pathetic. Just like bringing your boys to a fight.

Oh, and someone needs to tell him to not wear sleeveless t-shirts. Redheads don't need to show their underarm hair...it's gross.

Q-Tip "Gettin Up" Unofficial Vidie

I had been reading how Q-Tip was finally going to release some new material, but, somehow I missed this. Back there, over your shoulder, in early July streams of the QT's new song "Gettin' Up" were released. Now, there is at least an unofficial video.

I'm a big fan of Tribe Called Quest and it's nice to see Tip getting back into that kind of vibe. When he came out with "Vibrant Thing" and "Breathe and Stop" I was less than impressed with his musical departure. To me it just seemed like he was fronting and not being the Q-Tip we all knew and love. But, like I said, it seems like he's back to the way thing should be. (Nah Right)

More Fleet Foxes Interview

So, a few weeks ago I hipped you to the first part of a John Norris interview with Fleet Foxes. Well boys and girls--here's the second part.

Oh, and the live version of "Winter White Hymnal."

Hank 3 "Long Hauls & Close Calls" Video

This one is a bit different from the little bit of Hank 3 that I know. "Long Hauls..." has more of a Rockabilly sound in lieu of the more rebel rousing traditional sound he had on Strait To Hell. I think it may take a few more spins of this one for it to sink in properly.

Sorta CD Release

I told you last week that Sorta plans on having a CD release party to celebrate their new self-titled album. Well, it will be October 21 at The Pontiac Garage (formerly Cambridge Room) inside the House of Snooze.

It's odd they would venture away from the Granada though. Their party for Strange and Sad But True was a huge turn out for the Granada. So, I'm not sure TPG will be able to hold all the peeps wanting to attend. I'm sure it will be a sold out event. But, it should be a great show. The PG is a great intimate venue and the band should be able to put on another great show there.

MMJ on ACL

The good guys over at Ultra8201 attended last nights Austin City Limits taping with My Morning Jacket. I'm a big fan of ACL and I'm super-jealous they were able to attend such a fantastic show.

Oh, and they also have the set list. Check it here. I'm not sure how they do the shows. I guess the band does an entire show and then ACL chops it down to the 30 minute or hour segments. I would imagine MMJ will get an hour episode after this one.

Ladytron "Ghosts" Remix

Ladytron has gotten the remix treatment for their song "Ghosts" by New Yorks alt-rap collective Blestenation. A lot of the same Ladytron production remains intact. But, as the label puts it, Blestenation has added "some ghettotech percussion and verses from MCs Werdplay and Various over top... tasteful, but a completely different steez."

As I'm writing this I'm giving it my first listen...fn sweet y'all. If you like a De La Soul type of flow then you will love this track.

We've been asked not to post the remix on our blogs. Kind of a bummer, but you can get the track here at RCRDLBL. I would say download it as quickly as you can, it's a hot one. But, until then take a listen to some Blestenation. I'm new to them, as of this morning new, but they good.

Free Chemical Brothers Remix

In anticipation of the Chemical Brothers releasing another compilation CD they are giving away a free remix of one of my all-time favorite ChemBros tracks--Hey Boy, Hey Girl. It's one of those tracks that you can't really turn up loud enough. I still love the crazy manipulated guitar breakdown...so fucking great.

Go here to download Hey Boy, Hey Girl (Soulwax "2 Many DJs" Remix). It's a great reworking of the song...it's one of the rare times a remix doesn't outshine the original.

Hymns Daytrotter Session

One of my favorite bands I've listened to this year are the Hymns. They've been through the D a couple of times now, and they recently did some recording for the Daytrotter Sessions. If you're not familiar with the Daytrotter Sessions get familiar using the world's most reliable sourse.

If you aren't familiar with the Hymns, you should be. If you like a Southern fried rock sound then you'll definitely like the Hymns.

Click on the Daytrotter link above and it will take you directly to the Hymns section of the site. There are four fantastic songs for download: "LA, or Babette Sange," "Time Told Me," "Streets Alone" and "St. Sebastian."

I like the sound of "Time Told Me." It has a sound that reminds me of the countrified songs of the Rolling Stones I've heard...maybe Tom Petty with a horn section. For a New York band they sure do have the Southern sound down pat.

Fleet Foxes at Lola's

I'm not sure how I let this one slip by me--Fleet Foxes are going to stop at Lola's in Ft. Worth as they make their way to ACL.  The Lola's show is on a Friday, September 26, then their in Austin the next day.

This is another great Spune show.  Those guys get some of the best acts and produce some of the best posters for their shows.  I'd love to know how they do it.

New Sorta

One of my absolute favorite local bands, Sorta, will finally release their new album on October 21. They plan to have release show/parties in Austin, Dallas and maybe Denton and Ft. Worth. There will also be a preview of the upcoming album in September issues of D Magazine and Pop Matters.

Until then, enjoy the best song about a girl being thrown off of an overpass by her boyfriend.

So, You Want to Destroy My Sweater?

Some handsome devil over at DC-9...okay it's me. Check out my post over at The Dallas Observer's DC-9 at Night music blog about the new Centro-Matic song "Christmas 83: Make Fun of My Sweaters."

"Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Pt. 2"

Or, what my wife says to me on a nightly basis. I kid, I kid. But, since MMJ is going to be at the Palladium on Saturday I thought it's a good time to post their newest vidie.

A Hipsters Wet Dream

That's right, I said it. Jealous?

Anyhoo, Austin's third music festival has a pretty stellar line-up of indie bands. It's looks like they have all of their bases covered. Punk, rock, hip-hop and electronic. To bad Dan Deacon sucks balls. Have you ever heard that guy? Geez, suck.

But, again, I think it's weird that Austin has one, two, three music festivals and Dallas has nothing. You can't count Ozzfest because that may or may not come back. And other than that it's in "Far North Dallas," er Frisco. Thanks to Ultra 8201 for hipping us to this. (Ultra8201)

Jackin' Jay-Z

So, the "feud" between Jay and Oasis is...dumb.  I mean, onto the next level?  Either way we now have a snippet of a mash-up of Jay and Oasis.  Yeppers, it's seems DJ Danny Diggz has mashed "Jockin' Jay-Z" with "Wonderwall."

It's a passible mash-up, nothing to spectacular.  As long as Jay beefed with Nas, I wonder how long he's going to keep bringing up being dissed by Noel?  I guess Jay doesn't realize that's about all Noel does these days.  Anyhoo, go here, follow the links and you can download it.  (Nah Right)

TV on The Radio "Golden Age"

Ready to hear some new TVOTR from Dear Science,?  Well then head to their Myspace page and hear a snippet of "Golden Hour."  I was bummed when I realized it was a snippet.  But, it gives me hope for the new album.  The Return to Cookie Mountain was a bit of a letdown compared to Deperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.  But, this funky new track does give me hope for the new album.

The Valentine, er, Fieros on Indie 103.1

One of the former really good Dallas bands, The Fieros, were on "Feel My Heat" on Indie 103.1.  But, it was back in July.  If you don't know anything about Indie 103.1 you should know this:  It's cool.  It's like KEGL back in the day, or Z Rock back in the day.  Yeah, that big.

So, they were on former "That 70's Show" star and music junkie Danny Masterson's show.  But, it had guest hosts that night...so, that kinda sucks.  But, being featured on that station is a BIG step in the right direction for The Fieros.  Now if they would just release a fn album that would be great.  I would think since they moved to Brooklyn they would get to know all the hipster bands and get on to a release.  But, that hasn't happened yet.  However, until that day comes you can download the songs they do have out on their Myspace page.  It's free and the music is good so do it!

Oh, and you can listen to their feature on Indie 105.3 here.  (DC9)

Sign of The Apocalypse...Now?

No, I haven't gone all CMT on your asses.  But, proud Oklahoman and #1 Sooner fan Toby Keith actually had good things to say about Barack Obama.  I thought I felt the ol' ground tremble today.  Maybe it had something to do with this:

"And I think he's the best Democratic candidate we've had since Bill Clinton. And that's coming from a Democrat."

As a proud Okie myself, and Democrat (card carrying!), I have to say that this is maybe the weirdest things I've read all day.  I thought Oklahoma had been a red state for at least 20 years but, maybe I'm wrong.  And, I'm not sure if it's a dig or not since he compared him to William Jefferson Clinton.  It's just weird to hear it coming from the guy who sang the ultra-right-wing "Courtesy of The Red, White and Blue," ya know?

Broken West Coming to DFW/D

The Broken West is coming to Denton to play at Dan's Silverleaf. Why should you care? Because they are a great band in the lines of Spoon. Well, to me they are Spoon-ish. A great pop-rock band with a great sound.

And...they are playing with Denton legends Cento-Matic to start their tour off.

The Cool Kids "Pennies"

Tha's right, y'alls! The Chicagoland B-boys have a new one out! It's one of the best tracks I've heard by them in a while and it features the best whistling since "Patience." It is available for free download via Nah Right.

Just follow the link and you'll be ok. Okay? Oh, and don't forget about their show at the Granada next week. Alls you have to do is RSVP here and it's free.

World's Most Useless Remix

Sure, a lot of us have fond memories of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I mean, who could forget the time Carlton tried to prove how "street" he was to Will and got in a whole mess-a trouble in the 'hood? Or the time Carlton danced like Tom Jones. Or the time Will made fun of Carlton. Or when Hilary went shopping and talked about poor people. Good times, right?

Then I saw a post in Rock & Roll Daily about it and I realized things had gone too far. Much like the Transformers movie and the still in the works G.I. Joe movie someone has done gone and ruined my perfectly nostolgic memory of my youth. Why in the world would anyone...anyone want to do a remix of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song. That's the dumbest idea since getting W to run for President.

So, listen to how dumb it is and agree with me. AGREE I SAID!!

"Lucy Rider" Video

I can't believe I haven't seen this video. I guess I was too...uh...dumb? to look it up on YouTube. But, this has been one of my absolute faves this year, "Lucy Rider" by Alberta Cross. Gotta love the neo-hippy vibe...I do.

MP3: Alberta Cross - Lucy Rider

Thievery Corporation Coming To HOB

No, I'm not talking about Enron or anything associated with George W. But, you prolly could've guessed that from the picture, huh? Anyhoo, the greatness of Thievery Corporation is coming to the D in October. October 26 to be exact and they will play the House of Snooze.

The duo are touring in support of their latest album Radio Retaliation out on September 23.

School of Seven Bells "Connjur"

I get this from the most reliable source in the world Wikipedia: The band is named after legendary pick-pocketing training academy. It's on the Internet, so it has to be correct, right? Right.

Anyhoo, SVIIB will support M83 on tour this fall.  It would've been nice if they came through the D...but, it's not happ'nin'...yet.  M83 is ok, but, School of Seven Bells is much cooler.

But, until then have a listen to the newest track a listen.  It's good y'all!

Yeah, They Local

I'm going to try and do this particular post as often as possible. Dallas has no shortage of great music talent and it should be show. Sure, The Rev, Eryka, Toadies, 97's, Polyphonic and Stevie Ray all great and worthy of praise. However, there really isn't a shortage of local musical talent.

This leads me to the first installment of "Yeah, They Local" with Dallas' The New Frontiers. The Indie rock/Americana band was unknown to me until very recently...i.e. this afternoon. But, I've had "Black Lungs" on repeat pretty much all day. The songs deftly cribs the slide guitar from Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" and turns it on it's ear with an Americana twist. If you check out their Myspace page make sure you listen to their take on Gillian Welch's "Look at Miss Ohio" handling the lamentable line "I want to do right, but not right now" with pure unadulterated greatness.
The band hasn't gone without it's share of positive critical response. Paste Magazine, Under The Radar Magazine and Spin.com have all given praise for the bands debut release Mending.

There isn't a bad track on Mending, "Black Lungs," "Walking on Stone" and "The Day You Fell Apart" are just some of the stand out tracks. You can pick up Mending here. It's well worth your hard earned sheckles.

Oh, and do yourself a solid and check out their Daytrotter Session and download (for free) their songs.

Fleet Foxes Interviewd by...John Norris?

There are a couple of things that I'm really surprised about. A) That the Fleet Foxes would get as much hype as they have and would be on "the lips" of so many people. B) That John Norris is still with MTV.

I quit watching MTV a looooong time ago. At the time I quit watching the channel it was all boy-bands and pop starlets. Mr. Norris does not seem to age! That and he's an ever changing chameleon. Whether it's Grunge, New Wave or Indie Johnny Boy keeps up with the fashion and hair trends. Geez. But, he will never, ever be as great as Kurt Loder. Ever. Period. I digress.

Check out the very interesting interview he did with Seattle's own Fleet Foxes.

Matt Miller

I recently received an email from a young singer/songwriter our of the California by the name of Matt Miller. He wanted me to take a listen to his new EP titled cleverly enough EPII.

I get a ton of bands who would like for lil' ol' me to listen to their music and write about it. And most of the time it's kinda sucky or at least kinda okay. However, that wasn't the case with Mr. Miller. He has a strong voice and is a great fn songwriter and I was completely blown away. I really like the album opener "You're There Somewhere;" but the best track on his gorgeous album is "The Question Still Remains." Do yourself a solid and check it out on his Myspace page. EPII will be out soon on iTunes, so, definitely grab it for your iPhone or iPod.

New Jay-Z, Jay Hova, Jigga Song

Last week I hipped you to the newest of the new for Jay-Z; his new joint "Jockin' Jay-Z." But, today, thanks to Nah Right, you can hear the entirety of "Jockin' Jay-Z," which was produced by super-ego Kanye West.

When I saw the video I thought it was the diggy-dope shiz. Now that I hear the song in it's entirety it doesn't sound that great. But, I will let you decide. (Nah Right)

School of Seven Bells "Half Asleep"

Stereogum has posted the new single from School of Seven Bells, "Half Asleep." And I have to tell you, it's pretty fn good. I really like "Chain" and I can't wait to pick up their new album.

"Half Asleep" sounds like it has a sample from a song on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. I may be thinking of the shows theme song. SVIIB's debut album, Alphinism, is coming out in October.

Anyhoo, it's a great track and you can check it out here.

But, check out "Chain" too...it's below.

MP3: School of Seven Bells - Chain

The Weepies "Hideaway" Video

Lately it seems that a large number of musical artists are enlisting their fans to help with album art, videos and the like. Well, one lucky fan won a contest The Weepies were holding for fans to create a music video to capture the spirit of "Hideaway."

Well they got just that when Michael Warner submitted his video. It's really good and does in fact capture the essence of the song.

Check it out.

Live Fleet Foxes

The totally awesome Heather Browne, fellow Pearl Jam enthusiast and blogger for I Am Fuel, You Are Friends has uploaded some live Fleet Foxes from the Hi-Dive in Denver, CO. I was lucky enough to see them at The Loft last month and they were good and junk.

So, go here and gets it!

MP3: Fleet Foxes - Drops in The River (Live @ Hi-Dive)

Jigga Debuts New Joint w/Kanye

Apparently the beef Jay-Z had with Noel Gallagher isn't over yet. Since Noel said he didn't think a rapper should've headlined the Glastonbury Festial Jay has been kinda pissed. To open his headlining spot at Glastonbury Jay did a very bad version of "Wonderwall." Now he's dissin' Oasis in a new track that is supposedly going to be on Blueprint 3. (Rock & Roll Daily)

Here's the vidie of the new track.

It's The Shiz

Well, if Kid Rock can use "Werewolves of London" with "Sweet Home Alabama" and make a new song out of it then you can use "Werewolves..." and mash it up with the Wu, right?  Cool.

Then if you like "Werewolves of London" and you love Wu-Tang then you will love this tune.

Minus The Bear Come to The D

That's right, Minus The Bear are coming to Dallas. They will be playing the House of Snooze on November 10. That's a Monday kids. I know, I know, you are already tired from the partying on the weekend and a whole days worth of work. I feel you dawg, I do. But, you need to get your lazy asses out and see them.

So, check out their tour dates, mp3 and video below for "Throwing Shapes." The song is really good and the video is spectacular! Gotta love it when love conquers all in imaginary basketball!

More New Kings of Leon!

However, this time there is not free download. You actually have to go to their Myspace page and listen to it. C'mon people, you can do it! They uploaded "Sex on Fire" to their player and it's fn awesome!

Aside from "Crawl" being nine kinds of awesome, "Sex..." is just as good. I can not wait until the new album comes out. If the first two tracks are any indication as to how good the album will be, then this one should be gold Jerry!

Go here and listen y'all!

Weekend Show in The D

Don't forget, tonight the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is playing a special acoustic show at Club Dada. I'm sure it's going to be packed...so get there early. I'm sure somewhere Anton Newcombe is cursing about them and trying to pick a fight with a band member.
