No New Postal Service Anytime Soon

It seems that Give Up is not just the name of the only current Postal Service record to date, it may be the only one. Ben Gibbard states in an interview that a new PS record "may or may never happen." Sad, I really like Give Up and would love for them to follow up with another. (Spinner)

Grand Ole Party

In this time of great political debate, Democrat vs. Republican, old vs. new, Coke vs. Pepsi, there is one political party that won't let you down and leave with the feeling of shame in the morning: Grand Ole Party.

I have just been turned onto the San Diego threesome recently. These three bring the funk (and the noise!). Drummer Kristen Gundred gets all indie Phil Collins on our asses as she sings and plays drums! Her vocals are reminiscent of Karen O. But, that's not a bad thing since I like the sound of Karen's voice. But, where Yeah Yeah Yeah's have are more of NY noise/punk sound, GOP brings the big beat bluesy sound.

Their debut album Humanimals was released earlier this month on DH Records.

Wale Tribute To The Sein

Washington D.C. MC, Wale, has a mix CD coming out that is inspired by Seinfeld. It's going to be a CD about nothing. Which is a lot like an Ja Rule CD *zing!* But, the beautiful and talented Julia Louis-Dreyfus is making a cameo on a skit. (EW)

Britt Daniel Sings In Cab!

Have you ever wanted to watch Britt Daniel sing in a cab? Well, it's funny that you do. Because now you can watch the Spoon frontman sing "I Summon You" in the back of a London taxi in his installment of Black Cab Session. It's kinda like the John Peel Sessions mixed with Taxi Cab Confessions. The only change being you won't see a woman who can lactate on command.

Torture Has A Mixtape!

The good people over at Mother Jones have put together a mix tape of music supposedly used to torture captives in American military prisons. The list was gathered from interogation logs, soldiers and news sources.

The list includes Metallica, Neil Diamond (!) and Christina Aguilera. (Rock & Roll Daily)

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelstin Make A Movie

The new album by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Pershing, will hit the streets April 8 via Polyvinyl. So, in honor of the weeks we have to wait, I have a little crumb of goodness. It's just a little behind the scenes look to what's going on in SSLYBY land during the making of the new record. (Morawk)

Noel Gallagher Is Having A Bad Week

Man, the brains behind Oasis is having a really bad week. On Sunday night he was denied entrance to not one, but two, post Oscar parties. Seems like fellow Brit Sir Elton John didn't want the him at his party, nor did Prince. It's not like it was Liam asking to get in, at least Noel has a little bit of sense, ya know? (Gigwise)

Now, it seems as if he's selling his holiday home in Ibiza because of James Blunt. I can't really blame him for that one. I wouldn't want to live in the same town as him either. (Spinner)

Sere Cahoone

Sere Cahoone has been in the rock world for a while now. She's been in the bands Carrisa's Wierd and then drummed for Band of Horses on Everything All The Time. Her Sub Pop debut, Only As The Day is Long is coming out on March 18.

The title track from her album is a nice alt-country, country tinged number featuring banjo and harmonica. It reminds me, a little bit, of late 70's early 80's country. At first listen the hook reminded me of "Why Lady Why?" by Alabama. But, upon further listens it reminds me of someone and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe that's why I like this song so much, it's familiar but not a carbon copy of someone else's work.

Sera Cahoone - Only As The Day Is Long (mp3)

Ozzfest May Have Dallas Home

It seems that danger could be on the horizon for Dallas area yutes. Rumors are floating around that Ozzfest could reside in Dallas this year as a "destination" festival.

It's a good thing that Laura Miller isn't in office anymore or this wouldn't even be close to happening. (Rock & Roll Daily)

Sign of The Apocalypse

Thank you Stereogum for ruining my day! They posted a story regarding the new deal Warner Bros. music gave gossip blogger Perez Hilton to start an imprint label. I'm all up for bloggers getting a music label, sign me up! But, he's a gossip blogger. I'm not sure how much people really care about the music he suggests. I didn't really see Beth Ditto's band goe through the roof after he blogged about them. And he jumped on the Ghostland Observatory train about a year late.

Basically, I'm pissed because he's a gossip blogger. Shouldn't he be getting his own version of People magazine or something? (Stereogum)

Alice in Chains Biopic

Apparently there is a biopic in the works for Alice in Chains/Layne Staley as the subject matter. Newcomer Lathan McKay has been cast to portray Layne.

I guess if Kurt can score a biographic movie, then Chains can too. I'm assuming the one about AIC will just be a lot darker and more gritty. Ya know, like their songs! Doot, doot!(Stereogum)

The Black Keys

Rock & Roll Daily has a sweet profile on The Black Keys today about their recording sessions for their new album Attack and Release. You can check it out here. (Rock & Roll Daily)

School of Seven Bells

I've been wanting to write about this band for a few weeks now so I could hip you to their awesome tunes. But, the only song available "Limb by Limb" is ho-hum compared to their other tracks. The band consists of Benjamin Curtis who is a former member of Secret Machines, Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. The style is slightly shoe gazy, with a dark poppy, layered sound. You can check out three of their songs on their Myspace page. I am totally hooked on the song "Chains."

As soon as I'm able to post up some songs I will. Until then check out their profile to stream songs.

Aster

I'm not really sure when the two-man band thing really got off the ground and took off. My first exposure to it was the White Stipes who do it perfection. Then, there are the Black Keys who are equally as good. And then there are a bunch more that are on the tip of my tongue but I can't name right now.

You can now add Austin, TX's Aster to the mix of two-man bands. Their debut album Some Things Seldom Heard Of is out now. Musically the remind me a little bit of Grandaddy only a little more electronicy. But, the intro to "Stop The Parade" sounds more like Coldplay on testosterone and without the wimpiness. It's a nice little jam.

Aster - Stop The Parade (mp3)

Wilco

Evangelicals - Midnight Vignette Video

The Evangelicals have released their deliciously campy video for "Midnight Vignette" off their new album The Evening Descends. Part video, part dance party, all camp. Love it.

The boys from Norman, OK will be headling a show here in Dallas 3/11 at The Cavern with guests the Headlights. Should be a good one.

All Points West Festival Line-Up Announced

The inaugural line-up for the All Points West Festival, aka Coachella East, has been announced. Radiohead (two nights), Jack Johnson, Underworld, Kings of Leon, The New Pornographer, The Roots and Cat Power will all be there.

Aside from the acts I just mentioned it seems to be a pretty weak line-up. Same thing that happened with Coachella this year. But, it should be good times. (All Points West)

Ed Has Nice Things To Say About Jack

Klaxons Cover "No Diggity"

It's one of those days when you're lookin' out the window and all you see is rain-a-fallin' down and you don't really want to do anything. You know what I mean, right?

So, I'm doing a little blog surfing when I come across this little gem of a tune. It's The Klaxons doing a cover of "No Diggity" recorded at the BBC1. I remember when this song would get all the ladies out on the dancefloor at my college bar The Hangar. Ah, good times.

I'm not a huge fan of The Klaxons, but, they did this song justice.

Burial

Burial is a Garage/2-step producer from the UK. And to be very honest, this is the best track electronic track I've heard in a while. It has a dark quality to it, to be honest it sounds like a track Deep Dish would put on a mix compilation. I love, love, love this track. (Spin)

The Capitol Years

To most people The Capitol Years means a compilation disc of Frank Sinatra tunes. But, to other people, it's the name of a Philadelphia band. TCY are slightly moody, delightful indie band. It's like when you think back on unrequited love in a fond way. Yeah, it could make you a little sad, but, it makes you happy that you remembered it.

Cherry Tulips Video

Okay, I know I'm obsessed with Headlights. But, man they good!

Ghostland Observatory Add Shows

Thanks to the good people at Spin we find out that Ghostland Observatory have added dates to their very short tour in support of Robotique Technique. Dates added? Yes, Dallas, Boulder, Chicago and Detroit. Great, they come to Dallas and it's a St. Patty's Day Party? Great! I can watch drunken SMU sorority girls throw up on someone and the yell "Woo-Hoo!" and start dancing again while her $30,000 millionaire boyfriend preens for everyone. Thanks guys.

Some Racing, Some Stopping Review

Some Racing, Some Stopping is the follow-up to Headlights debut
Kill Them With Kindness and was released today. I've been listening to this album non-stop for a few weeks now and I have to tell you that it's an extraordinary bit of indie-pop. I was drawn to the group by the single "Cherry Tulips" with the beautiful voice of Erin Fein, because it reminded me of my other love Camera Obsura. Safe to say I was not disappointed by the album.

The disc starts off with the uplifting "Get Your Head Around It," sung by Tristan Wraight, which seques nicely to "Cherry Tulips." Sharing vocal duty, Tristan Wraight sings on tracks "Market Girl," "Get Your Head Around It" and "Catch Them All." The only complaint I would have about the album is Tristan's voice. It's not horrible by any stretch of the imagination, but, for some it can take getting use to. I can compare it closely to Shaun Robinson of Oppenheimer (which I happen to like).

Pick the album up here and let it turn into your album of the summer because you will not be disappointed.

Beans

I come to you today in the name of Beans. The phenomenal MC who is formerly part of the Anti Pop Consortium is about to drop his new album Thorns. The first song off the album is "Thundermouth." It a nice little banger reminiscent of his other works. Beans is a very imaginative wordsmith and it's great to see he still brings the heat.

Oh, and my personal fave of Mr. Beans off his album Now Soon Someday.

Best Band Logos

Our good friends over at Spinner.com have compiled a list of the 25 Greatest Band Logos of all time. Sadly, the Ramones come it at a measley 25. But, there are some iconic logos on the list and you should check it out.

.357 String Band

Their website says their music is "Amphetimene fueled streetgrass," and by the looks of them that couldn't be far off. The .357 String Band come from the home of The Fonz, Laverne and Shirley, the Brewers and Milwaukee's Best. Believe me, I'm not trying to make light of the band, they are the genuine article when it comes to a string band. The press says Old Crow Medicine Show has "punk attitude." But, .357 tears that down and builds it back up only with more attitude.

The .357 String Band consists of Joe Huber on banjo/vocals, Derek Dunn on Guitar/vocals, Jayke Orvis on Mandolin/vocals and Rick Ness on the Upright Bass/vocals. Their sound has more in common with Hank 3 and Outlaw Country than they do with Old Crow. They don't have a label as of yet, but, they do have a CD you can buy here.

.357 String Band - Up Jump The Devil (mp3)

Hip-Hop's Greatest Year

Rollingstone.com has a list of the greatest Hip-Hop Albums of 1988, "Hip-Hop's Greatest Year." There are some noteworthy choices, PE's It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back, NWA's Straight Outta Compton and more. They have Biz's album, Goin' Off, on the list, and I can't really dispute that. But, I can question why they didn't put "Nobody Beats The Biz" as one of the key tracks! That song is 100% greatness. Check it out here.

Citay

Citay are a Bay Area band with lush harmonies and melodies reminiscent of a moody version of the Beach Boys. "First Fantasy," off their album Little Kingdom, actually reminds me of the Oasis track "Who Feels Love?" only with a longer instrumental break. ACL Rumors

I posted earlier in the week about Pearl Jam rumored to be playing the Austin City Limits Festival this year. Well, it seems like the whispers are getting louder. Alegedly, supposedly the rumors about Pearl Jam playing this year's Austin City Limits Festival are true. They have supposedly booked a taping of Austin City Limits for the week of the festival. If ACL knew what was good for them they would just record the live show and broadcast that. But, a studio show would be cool too. Also rumored to be there: Radiohead, Sigur Ros and Roger Waters. I have absolutely no proof of this...it's all rumor.

If the rumors are true, it looks like it could be another banner year for the ACL Festival.

Morgan Page

For the last couple of days I've been listening to "The Long Road" by L.A. electronica producer Morgan Davis, off his new album Elevate, almost non-stop. It's pretty infectious from the beginning of the track.

Davis has also done remix work for Regina Spektor, Nelly Furtado, and Tegan & Tara. He listed one of his influences as Everything But The Girl, so, he's okay in my book.

Ghostland Observatory Remix

Thanks to Stereogum, we have finally heard something good off of Ghostland Observatory's Robotique Mistique. Unfortunately, it's a remix of "Dancin' on My Grave". I like the original version of the song pretty well, much better than "Heavy Heart". The Remix of "...Grave" is glitchy, a little bit of acidy, peak hour house. Good stuff.

A New Reason to Hate OSU

OSU has many things to be proud of, but, I can't really think of any. Not only are they mediocre at football, they apparently like to turn in their students to the Music Nazi's aka the RIAA. They have turned in 11 students for illegally downloading music on school computers. Now, I don't think you should download illegally, but, I don't think someone should have their lives screwed up because some college kid downloaded "Stronger" illegally instead of getting it off of iTunes.

M.I.A. Remixed by Ad Rock

M.I.A. has gotten the remixical treatment for her jam "Paper Planes" by none other than the King Ad Rock (he's a Scorpio). It's pretty good stuff and you should check it out if you dare.

Free Moby!

So, really, I'm not a huge fan of the Mobester. But, I do really like his Move EP from like 10 years ago. Thanks to the kids at Rock & Roll Daily for letting us know he's offering a free DJ mix download to promote his new album.

Tulsa

Thank you to My Old Kentucky Blog for turning me onto these guys. They were buried in an article about another band, but, I gave them a spin and was blown away by their song "Mass" off their album I Was Submerged released late last year.
While it's true the vocals have a lot in common with My Morning Jacket, don't discount these boys from Massachusetts.

Everybody Knows About Rumors...

Are Pearl Jam hopping on the festival circuit this summer? They've already been confirmed playing Bonnaroo. But, there is a rumor they will be playing ACL this year. There isn't any proof, this is only rumor.
