The New Pornographers Come To The D

Yep, A.C., Neko and the rest of the crew are hitting up Dallas on their tour behind the new album The Crash Years. They will be at "The Showroom" at Palladium... which I can only assume is the ballroom, on Saturday, July 24.

Live Camera Obscura

The Camera Obscura will head back to the DFWd area in April as they play Hailey's in Denton on 4/10. If you can't make it, enjoy this big of video from their concert in Williamsburg in November.

Although Tracyanne Campbell looks like she bored/sad most of the time she's on stage I can't help but crush on her... she's cute as a button.

Audrye Sessions Turn Me On

I'm not sure what it is about female bass players that I find so alluring, but, it is definitely a bug I have and can't seem to shake.  It's happened before with Stellastarr* and Silversun Pickups... and it's happened again with Audrye Sessions.

Their music runs along the lines of the Aussie band Youth Group, whom it seems the opening guitar was cribbed, and a little bit of a harder edged Toad The Wet Sprocket.  Good music that is only "alternative" because it's indie and not because of the way it sounds.  And, bass player Alicia Marie Campbell is a looker, yeow!

Next week the band will come through The D with Manchester Orchestra at The Loft.  Should be a good show.

Killer Crocs

I was recently turned on to the Crocodiles and found their sound familiar yet hard to pin down.  They have a smidge of the Black Angels drone, very much "Head On" era Jesus and Mary Chain and maybe even a little bit of Echo and The Bunnymen (only a little more rocky) to round everything out.

Regardless, I've been listening to a helluva lot of them the last week or so.  And they are coming to Dallas as the support band for Holy Fuck.

Music From The Great Northern...

Summer is-a-comin' , which living in Texas could mean it'll be here next week.  But, I know finally have some new songs that feel like summer to listen to... and one of them is "Houses" by Great Northern.

Their songs switch singers between Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte.  When Stolte sings it reminds me of Nina Gordon formerly of Veruca Salt, and the great song "Tonight and The Rest of My Life."  "Houses" is a great songs and it makes me wish summer were finally here.

Old Crow Coming Back To The Granada

Finally, Old Crow Medicine Show is coming back to Dallas.  I knew they would be coming to town sooner or later to promote their latest album Tennessee Pusher, I just didn't think it would take this long.  The best part is they're coming back to the Granada.  I saw them there a few years ago and it was hands down the best show I've been too.

MP3:  Old Crow Medicine Show - Soul Rebel (Bob Marley Cover)

Tour dates:
5/6/09 Dallas, TX @ The Granada Theater

This is part of their performance of "Wagon Wheel" from the Granada the last time they were there.

Santigold Comes To The D

It didn't take very long for my wish that she comes to town to come true.  My wife turned me onto Santigold about three months ago and I love her album.  Her debut fluidly moves from indie pop to dub to reggae and I loves it.  I just hope that since the Dallas stop is near the end of her tour it will still be a good show.  I love this time of year, all the show dates start rolling in and my summer starts to look better and better.

The Moz Comes Back To The D

Yeppers, the world's most famous asexual vegan is coming back to The D.  He will be playing the Palladium Ballroom on April 10.  That seems to be a fitting place for him to play.  Although, it would've been a sweet to if he could've played at the Granada.  I saw him a few years ago in OKC and it was one of the best shows I've been to.  It had all the things you would expect, concert goers bringing him flowers, jumping up on stage, Moz swinging his mic cord in true crooner fashion.

His stop in Dallas will be in support of his new album Years of Refusal--as you can see the above cover.  I'm not sure what's more disturbing about the cover; the fact that he's visibly uncomfortable holding a baby and doesn't really know how to hold one or the fact the baby is happy with a large hand on his/her junk.

Rock The Vote Hymns Style

If there is anything concert going fans like to do it's see their favorite artist at an MTV sponsored Rock The Vote Tour.  The only thing they like more than that is to have their favorite artist tell them who to vote for.

As long as their just urging you to do something, that's cool.  I don't like for anyone to get to preachy, ya know?

Anyhoo, the greatness of the Hymns are joining the Rock The Vote tour and can be seen at the places below.

Yeah, They Local

It's no secret that Denton is the newest musical hot bed in the country and has been for a while now.  You have local giants Cento-Matic and Midlake coming out of Lil' D, blog darlings Ghosthustler and Robert Gomez...now you can add Sarah Jaffe to that list.

Her music is often described as folk, but, that's not necessarily the case.  Yeah, it's acoustic loveliness in every sense of the word, but not the type of folk one would expect from the bands associated with the genre.  Her music is more personal in nature than the elder statesmen of that genre; not the typical "Teach Your Children" harmonies of CS&N, "Union Made" of Pete Seeger or even the pastoral musings of Fleet Foxes' "Winter White Hymnal."

You wouldn't break her music out to liven up a dinner party, but, you would definitely break her out to say "fuckin' listen to this!"  Check out her Myspace page, listen to the defiant ferocity of "Under," it will hit you in the head like a freight train.  Oh, and the remix of "Two Intangibles."  That one is destined to be used in a pivotal scene in at least one movie.

She will be touring with Rhett Miller in September and then hit up Dan's Silverleaf.

Tour dates:
9/17/08 San Antonio @ Sam’s Burger Joint (w/ Rhett Miller)
9/18/08 Austin @ Threadgills (w/ Rhett Miller)
9/19/08 Dallas @ House of Blues/Cambridge Room (w/ Rhett Miller)

Girl In a Coma Coming To The D

One of San Antonio's finest all-girl bands, er, maybe the only all-girl band--Girl in a Coma are coming to Dallas.  I've been waiting for this one!  One of the best things about writing about music is I get to listen to new bands and I wrote about these girls a while back--they are amazing!

In the spirit of their label head, Joan Jett, these three ladies turn out ballsy punky rock.  If you're my brother, you wouldn't check them out because they're chicks.  That would be a dumb move, my friends.  Being a gifted musician shouldn't be defined by your gender.  I figure if they are good enough to get a personal invite from Morrissey to be his opening act then that's good enough for me.  But, throw in the fact that their songs are bad ass and Nina Diaz is an amazing vocalist, then I'm in bitches!

However, odd venue choice--Sue Ellen's?  Um, didn't know they put on shows there...but, cool?  It should definitely make for an interesting evening.

School of Seven Bells "Connjur"

I get this from the most reliable source in the world Wikipedia: The band is named after legendary pick-pocketing training academy. It's on the Internet, so it has to be correct, right? Right.

Anyhoo, SVIIB will support M83 on tour this fall.  It would've been nice if they came through the D...but, it's not happ'nin'...yet.  M83 is ok, but, School of Seven Bells is much cooler.

But, until then have a listen to the newest track a listen.  It's good y'all!

Say, Say My Baby!

So, I told you a lil' while back that TV on The Radio will release Dear Science, this fall and tour.  At the time I lamented the fact they wouldn't be coming to Dallas.  Well, my days of sadness are over folks!  They will be hitting Dallas on October 26!  But, that's a Tuesday...so, I'll prolly have to take off the next day for that one.

As you can see on the tour dates below, they will be playing at Lakewood Theater.  This is cool because I've never seen a show at the Lakewood.  However, I think it's kind of a strange venue for them to play.  The Palladium Ballroom would've been a better fit I think.  Maybe even the Granada.  It just seems like a weird place for them to place.  Ya know, out amongst the yuppies.

My Oklahoma peeps need to get to the Diamond Ballroom and catch this show y'all!(Ultra8201)

She & Him Start Tour Today

She & Him start their small tour today. And in what has to be one of the great music injustices of the 2008 summer, She & Him are not coming through Dallas. I was really hoping they would, but, I'm sure she's got a busy acting schedule and him is busy playing as M. Ward.

So, if the dates are anywhere around you, I would definitely go see them. I'm sure it would be a fantastic time. So, in lieu of them coming to the D-Town, listen to my favorite track off Vol. 1 "This is Not a Test" live from SXSW 2008. (I wonder if they will run into Prince at First Avenue? Maybe Morris Day?)

*Sorry, the tour started last night in Toronto. I wonder if they met Mr. Informer himself, Snow?*
