The Camera Obscura will head back to the DFWd area in April as they play Hailey's in Denton on 4/10. If you can't make it, enjoy this big of video from their concert in Williamsburg in November.
Although Tracyanne Campbell looks like she bored/sad most of the time she's on stage I can't help but crush on her... she's cute as a button.

About Last Night... Camera Obscura
Last night was the Camera Obscura show at The Loft. I was really looking forward to the show and I wasn't let down by seeing them live.
Probably the best part of the show was that there wasn't all the talking going on during the show. I couldn't believe it, you could actually hear the band without the din of voices all around you!
If you want to read my review on the show you can go over to DC9 at Night. You can also check out pics from the show at our Facebook or Myspace page.

Camera Obscura My Maudlin Career
Glasgow's Camera Obscura are a band out of time; they would've fit in nicely with pre-bat shit-crazy Phil Spector producing their album. They last couple of albums have a very "Wall of Sound" feel to them. The sweet vocals of Tracyanne Campbell fit in quite nicely with the bands sound.
My Maudlin Career starts off with the starkly upbeat "French Navy," upbeat isn't always what the band shoots for. But, what is noticeably different on this album compare to their phenomenal Let's Get Out of The Country is how the lyrics have shifted from being love lorn to being happy to search for love and giving love. It's most notable on the song "The Sweetest Thing" as she sings "I'm goin' on a date tonight/to try and fall in love with you." It seems that the protagonist in most of their songs have found love at one point and even if it hasn't worked out the way she expected, she's still happy to have experienced it.
Another notable departure from their last album is the lack of horns on this album, they've been replaced by string arrangements. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I just miss them.
My Maudlin Career will be out on April 21 via 4AD, you can pre-order it here.

More New Camara Obscura
There have been a couple of albums I've been anxiously awaiting this year. With Neko Case's album already out (it's fantastic) there is one more I can't wait for--Camera Obscura's My Maudlin Career. The latest single I've heard is "French Navy." It's whetting my appetite for the new album, I can't wait.

Brand New Camera Obscura
My long-ish wait for the new Camera Obscura album has almost drawn to a close. I fell in love with the Scottish sextet a few years ago when I heard "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken." Their last album Let's Get Out of This Country fused Chamber Pop, Twee or what ever you want to call it with the joy of 60's girl groups.
Since then they've left Merge Records and joined forces with the Pixies old label 4AD. From the sounds of their new album My Maudlin Career they are picking up right where they left off with the last one. My Maudlin Career will be out April 20th.
I honestly can not recommend the Camera Obscura enough, Let's Get Out of This Country is a great album that need to be in your CD player NOW!

Online Romances Can Be Good
Growing up I was always infatuated with 60's girl groups and music from that era. I think it was really the Wall of Sound that was so captivating to me. Now, bands with a similar sound are called "Twee" or "Chamber Pop." Of that sound it had mostly been dominated by European bands like Belle & Sabastian and Camera Obscura. Now you can add a Portland, OR band to that list: The Online Romance.
Not only is their name effin sweet, but so is their sound. Their Spectorian Wall of Sound is dominated by horns that give them a big, full sound. "Ladybug, Don't Smile" is a song off of their forthcoming album.
