Bassnectar | Magical World

Yesterday DC9 posted a Datahowler mash-up of Durrough's "Ice Cream Paint Job" pitted against the buzzed out bass of Bassnectar's "Magical World."

The Bassnectar backing music made me wish I were standing in front of a stack of top-of-the-line club PA system loud enough to make my insides rattle. Forget the fact that Nelly Furtado is the vocalist on the track, the bass is what's going to keep you coming back for his one.

Mount Righteous | Eat Your Wife And Kiss The Barbeque

It's been noted, most recently on DC9, that Mount Righteous are moving away from the delightfully happy sounds of their first album to a more, noisy, punk driven version of a marching band. And to be fair, they've always been a punk marching band, but, now they're moving into the area of noise reserved for Sonic Youth and Jesus And Mary Chain.

"Eat Your Wife And Kiss The Barbecue" is a further step in that direction. I think it's going to take seeing them live to fully appreciate their sound. Because at times it seems like a bunch of people in a room making disjointed noise.

But, you can make up your own mind...

About Last Night... Neko Case

I've had the opportunity to see Neko Case in concert twice now and I've not been disappointed either time. She is in a category with the like of Alison Krauss as far as her voice is concerned, they both have pure singing voices where they don't have to strain to hit the notes needed in a performance.

You can check out my "Last Night Review" of the show for The Dallas Observer here. Last night the place was packed and I was sandwiched in between a few really tall guys, so, I only got a few pics an no video this time.

About Last Night... Har Mar Superstar

So, it was technically like three days ago, but, it's all good. You can check out pics from the show here. And you can check out the "Last Night Review" of it here on DC9.

Ft. Worth's Best Fwends were, for me, the unlikely hit of the night. You have to give it to two nerds who perform back by music loaded on their iPod. Their stage presence was stellar and they knew how to work a crowd. And, throwing two large gargoyles into the crowed for them to bounce like balloons didn't hurt either.

Danny Balis Makes My Liver Cry

Friday night I got to meet up with some of our fine local music bloggers and musicians at the Slobberbone/Granada 5th Anniversary party. Due to prior plans I could only stay long enough to catch Danny Balis' set... and it did not disappoint. For those of us who like to sit on the patio, drink beer and listen to old time classic country tunes Balis should fit right into your rotation. He does not disappoint.

Smiling On The Inside... Maybe

On yesterday's edition of DC9's "DC9 in Space" featured local act Smile Smile. I know the name and who they are, however, I know very little about them. But, watching this video is like watching two people who can barely stand to be around each other, well, be around each other... it's charming and makes you cringe all at the same time.

I'm a little sketchy on the details, but, I think they once dated and one of them cheated and they are continuing to make music together. Like a really tiny version of Fleetwood Mac.

Their song new song "Beg You To Stay" is fantastic and apparently written about their experience together. Now that I've been initiated into the Smile Smile lifestyle, I think I'll be coming back for more.

About Last Night... Camera Obscura

Last night was the Camera Obscura show at The Loft.  I was really looking forward to the show and I wasn't let down by seeing them live.

Probably the best part of the show was that there wasn't all the talking going on during the show.  I couldn't believe it, you could actually hear the band without the din of voices all around you!

If you want to read my review on the show you can go over to DC9 at Night.  You can also check out pics from the show at our Facebook or Myspace page.

Trees To Reopen!!

When I read those words yesterday over at DC9 at Night I was happier than happy.  Trees was definitely one of the places I loved to go and see shows.

Hopefully they will get enough business to survive and stay open.  It will be nice to have something smaller than the Granada, but bigger than The Cavern to see a show.  I'm also hoping they book better national acts than Dada does.  If they can get a mix of local, regional and national acts coming through there it would be great.

Granted, Trees won't be like it use to be... nothing in Deep Ellum will.  But, with the nice mixed use of that district I think it will be able to thrive again... as long as people want to go to there.

See you there August 14th?

Old Crow Hootinanny

Yep, last night was another great performance by the boys of Old Crow Medicine Show.  The energy from the band was something to behold, the band was playing as hard as they could all night long.  It was also cool seeing a line go all the way around the building into the back parking lot.  The place was packed and it got really hot as the night went on.

Justin Townes Earle was fantastic.  Until last night I had only heard a few of his songs, but I was blown away with how great he was live.   He knows how to work a crowd and put on a show.  I've never seen his dad live, but I'm sure he could give him a run for his money.

I don't know how I can this any other way... Dallas, please shut the fuck up when the band is playing.  It's not an ice cream social and I (and a lot of other people) are there to see the band not listen to you talk to each other.  Thank you, that is all.

Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Granada Theater

Last night was my first live exposure to a live performance of Brian Jonestown Massacre and I was thoroughly impressed.  Honestly, I was really hoping to see lead BJMer Anton Newcombe freak the eff out and start a fight with a fellow band member, maybe an audience member... but alas, it was not to be.

Like I said, I was impressed by the band.  They have a great sound that spans a few different genres yet isn't jarring when it transitions.

Morrissey @ The Palladium

I got the chance to review Morrissey's show last night at the Palladium.  It was a pretty good show, but I was left a little bit disappointed.  It kinda seemed like he was just going through the motions, I like his OKC show from a few years back better.

That being said, check out my full review here for DC9 and you can check out pics here or here.

Kool Keith at The Loft

Last night was a fantastic show at The Loft.  Kool Keith brought the funk and the noize.  You can read my review for DC9 at Night here.  And, you can check out pictures from the show at our Myspace page here!

The Final Frontier

Saturday night I got to see my first, and last, The New Frontiers show.  While I was sad to see such a great local band go into that good night, I was happy to see the big crowd that was there to see them off.

I was also happy to see a couple of really good local bands:  Gazelles and This Will Destroy You.  Both of them were really good and I think you'll be hearing more about them here.

You can read my "Last Night" review of the show for DC9 at Night here.

Kings of Leon

Apparently I did something I shouldn't have because my post I made about KoL from Wednesday is gone. Poof! But, the show was bad ass and probably the best show of theirs I've seen. I also apparently missed Nathan throwing the upside down horns at the end of the show. Ah, love my Sooner fans.

I met a bunch of great peeps there, and I can't remember their names. But, there were actually a lot of really cool people at the show. Not your typical to cool for school Dallas kids. Oh, and to Bailey the bartender--I love you!

You can read my "Last Night Review" of the show here.

You Like Music, Right?

In their never ending quest to find out what people think of the current musical landscape; DC9 at Night has asked the musical geniuses at Mockingbird Station what they think about "Golden Age" by TV on The Radio. Why? Because they are playing the Lakewood tonight.

Not a knock on DC9, I just think it's funny they were at Mockingbird Station...cause the yuppies go there.

New Sorta

Well, tonight was the CD release show for the new Sorta CD.  I unfortunately had to miss it, I'm hoping to start catching more shows soon as soon as the work junk gets sorted out.  DC9 has a post containing a free download of the new track "Fool's Gold."

It's not a bad track per se, but, it's not great.  Trey has his usually crisp vocals, but, I'm not really diggin' the piano on it.  It doesn't really sound like a Sorta track to me.  It sounds more like a light-rock tune.  I dunno, maybe it will grow on me.  Maybe.

Uh Huh Her Tonight

Tonight I will get to see Uh Huh Her, then really late tonight after the show I'll be writing the "Last Night Review" for DC9 at Night.

I'm not sure why I'm only now posting the video for their song "Not A Love Song." I mean, it has fn unicorns in it! I'm pretty excited about the show. It will be interesting to see how their brand of electronica infused pop/rock will come off live. Plus, I can't wait to check out Camila Grey and Leisha Haily in person. Oh, and The Fashion is opening up for them.

The Good Ol' Days

If you head on over to DC9 at Night you'll can read the Jeff Liles article about his days as a booking agent for the old Prophet Bar in Deep Ellum. You know, back when Deep Ellum was still thriving? The article centers around his inteactions working with Screamin' Jay Hawkins of "I Put a Spell On You" fame.

One of the best parts is when he booked The Reverend Horton Heat to open and Hawkins got pissed because he thought the good Rev was trying to upstage him. Little did he know, the Rev always puts on a great show.

Like I said, it's a very interesting read.

Neko Case Tonight

Tonight Neko Case is going to be at the Granada and I'll be there covering it for DC9 at Night.  I'm hoping it's going to be a great show!  Last nights Black Keys show was alright.  The band was tight, but, the crowd completely ruined it for me.

*EDIT* You can check out my "Last Night" review here.  Oh, and here's a pic a snuck in with my camera phone.  Yeah, I know--excellent quality, right?
