Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin | Sink/Let It Sway

Yes, yes, yes... Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin are back with a fresh new Chris Walla produced album and a new single "Sink/Let It Sway."

We've been big fans of theirs for a few years now, and even bigger fans of their outstanding album Pershing. While "Sink/Let It Sway" isn't quite on par, yet, with the tunes of their last album, it's a good start.

Sarah Jaffe | Vulnerable

Sarah Jaffe's sophomore album, Suburban Nature, is set to come out this May on Kirkland Records. The Denton chanteuse builds on her debut effort Even Born Again with a sound a little fuller and richer than her debut EP. The constant is her songwriting and her desperately emotive voice.

The girl is coming up the ranks with a recent European tour with Midlake and will be opening up for ex-pat Norah Jones on several dates as she strolls through the Southwest.

But, let us introduce you to her single "Vulnerable," one of Suburban Nature's best. Her album won't be out until May, but, this gem and the remix of "Two Intangibles Can't Be Had" are available now for download on iTunes.

Spoon "Written In Reverse" Video

Parade Of Naps

You wouldn't expect a sunny version of indie/chamber pop to come out of the cold climate of the Rust Belt, but that's just what a favorite band of ours has done. We got hooked on them a couple of years ago with "Postcard." But, their sound has progressed and gotten more sunny in the two years since it's last album.

Parade finds the band expanding it's sound to the areas close to that of Camera Obscura or The Clientele. Warm, gentle melodies that bounce around your head a embrace your heart.

Their new album Parade is out now.

Spoon Writing In Indulgent Reverse

I've been a fan of the Spoon for a while now. However, when I heard the first plunky piano strikes of "Written In Reverse," the first single off it's new album Transference... I was not... to... excited. I knew the band produced it themselves which made me a little scared. Because, isn't that when most bands go all out with their most bizarre shit? Yes.

But, after my initial listenings the song has grown on me and I see the error in my ways. I just hope Transference keeps the bands streak of fantastic albums alive. It's pretty hard for most bands to come out with six straight fantastico albums... Spoon is at five... and counting? You tell me.

Mark It Up

As I started this post I noticed that it's number 1,000 in our long illustrious blogging career. So, tip that Lone Star back celebrate peoples.

Back to our regularly scheduled program...

Kite In The Air have release their second EP, Magic Marker, and their second single "Stretch It On." It's a spacey chilled out, blissed-out, baby electro track that is perfect for... well, anything. But, alas, there is better news kids-- Magic Marker is available for free. Yep, as in you don't have to pay for it and it's not stealing! Just go here and you can listen to individual tracks or download the whole album.

Ryan Thomas Becker Neighborhoof

Ryan Thomas Becker is better known around these parts as the frontman/geetarist for Denton's RTB2. But, Ryan is releasing his latest solo album that has him keenly treading the line between sensitive singer-songwriter and full-on rock master.

Don't look for any John Mayer type ballads to make the girls weep, it's not that kind of singer-songwriter album. He deftly moves around the spectrum of with a slowed down, rocked up lo-fi sound that would make Gorilla vs. Bear jizz his pants.

It's kinda criminal that "Seek Fire, Anime Kids" is not even two minutes long as it starts Neighborhoof off with a vibe you are use to hearing with RTB2. But, that seems to be where any comparisons to his other band can stop until the middle of the record. Which is probably good, since I doubt he set out to make a solo record that sounds like his other band.

The rest of the album flows with songs like "Whistle" that goes through country-blues, "Premaries" the sensitive duet and "Where Your Father Didn't Go" which sounds like lo-fi doo-wop.

Neighborhoof will have a release show at J&J's Pizza in Denton on 12/1.

Spoon Transference

We told you about the Spoon's new song "Got Nuffin'" a while back. Now comes word that it's the first single on their new album Tranference. Can't-wait.

New Ronnie Fauss

Ronnie Fauss seems to be on a roll this year. He released his fantastic Songs For The Old Frontier, Vol. 1 earlier this year... and we really dug it. Now he's released I Can't Make You Happy, a lil' three-song EP that is available on iTunes.

Fauss is one of the alt-country/roots/indie/americana acts in Dallas that doesn't seem to get any kind of recognition. His songwriting teeters on heart string tuggers like "I Can't Make You Happy" and songs ready made for the honky tonks like "One Eye Open."

But, coming in January you'll get to see him open up play with Elkhart when both bands open up for Bosque Brown at our first show at City Tavern! Yes, I'm very excited about these developments... deets to come.

Download Passing By Behind Your Eyes

I've been told recently that I talk about Pretty Lights quite a bit. I was told it was every other-other day. Maybe. But, I can't help it the guy puts our really good records.

Anyhoo, I would've posted this yesterday but the man's site crashed due to the massive amount of people trying to down load the new album. But, it's back up and running today and you can get the new album here.

Once you download it, I HIGHLY suggest you check out the track "Keep Em Bouncin" and turn the ol' headphones/speakers to stun.

I Said Hi My Name Is Mos

On my daily post I do for DC9 I mentioned the Black Keys are doing a hip-hop album. It's kinda surprising, but, kinda not. They seem like a band hip-hop guys would be into instead of Radiohead and Coldplay... which a lot of them are.

Anyhoo, as you can see in the above vidie Mos Def is taking part in the project and it makes me all kinds of giddy. I've been a fan of Mos for a while and I dig the shiz he does on the first track. I also find it amusing when he tells Dan Auerbach he's been a big fan of their for a while and Dan says "Since college?" Funny shit, Dan.

The collabo (that's what the kids call it, right?), Blakroc will be out drop November 27.

Headlights Wildlife Preview

Reading that the new Headlights album was a "struggle" and that the band had scrapped their previous studio work on the album and started over again was a bit disheartening. Especially since the band was saying it was a darker album... I was a bit hesitant when listening to the new album.

While the album still employs similar sensibilities of Some Racing, Some Stopping it's still enough for fans of the group to easily latch onto the record. However, where Some Racing, Some Stopping had an upbeat, summer time feeling running throughout the album, Wildlife goes into the opposite direction as their fall album.

The album isn't a bummer, but, it's definitely a chillout album. Gone are the hopeful tones of dual singers Erin Fein and Tristan Wraight, replaced by mid-to-down-tempo numbers that reflect the difficult times they faced while recording Wildlife.

Again, that isn't to say the album is a downer. "I Don't Mind At All" and lead single "Get Going" reflect the tone of the album has the poppy sound you've come to expect from Headlights, the lyrics and vocals just don't sound too happy.

Headlight will play Denton's Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio November 19.

Save The Last Dance For The ER

The Raveonettes new song "Last Dance" is possibly the sweetest song about someone overdosing ever. If you were not really paying attention you would think it's a really sweet love song (and it kinda is). But, it's a promising start to their new album.

PJ's Feelin' Supersonic, Give Them Gin And Tonic

Tomorrow my brother is heading the Golden State to hang out with all those California kids at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. Sure, it's a trip to the bay, but, Pearl Jam are headlining. I know, I KNOW... how much Pearl Jam can I talk about? A lot.

But, their newest track, "Supersonic," has hit the internets, so, have a listen. Oh, and enjoy.

Oh, and if you see this guy tell him hello, he's a nice guy.

"The Fixer" Gets Crowe'd

I think we all know that here at BFD we're decidedly steadfast in our undying love of the thunder from the great Northwest that is Pearl Jam.

Their old sentimental friend Cameron Crowe directed their video for "The Fixer" from the upcoming Backspacer. I'm excited to hear the new material, because, believe it or not, the songs I've heard from the new album don't sound like what they've done before. It's fresh sound from the last great band of my era.

Hope Sandoval In "Trouble"

The newest single from Hope Sandoval graced me yesterday. It sounds like, to me, Southwestern Hope. She is touring for her new album... but, not here... or anywhere near here. But, there are suppose to be more dates added to her tour, so...

Trey Johnson Mount Pelee

As I popped in Mount Pelee I had already decided I was not going to like this album. I once met Trey Johnson at The Barley House and made the mistake of going up to talk to him. Needless to say, it was one of those moments fans of a band fear most... members of the band are dicks. And that night, is exactly what Johnson was, it soured me on Sorta for a long time.

However, in my steadfast belief that I would not like this album, I like it from the first note of "Old Reactions."

After the death of bandmate I expected Mount Pelee to be a collection of somber, introspective songs lamenting the death of a friend and reflections of life. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the pop-rock that runs throughout the record. "Bottle of Rum" channels a mainland version of Jimmy Buffett so much that you can almost hear waves crashing in the background. The closest song coming to what I was expecting is "Struggle To Find," it's the introspective ballad I was expecting and it's not disappointing. Touching on the things in life that are worth living for, it makes sense that it was included on this album.

Honestly, from beginning to end this is a fantastic record and I feel fine saying it.

New Grand Archives

It's been a little over a year since the Grand Archives released their eponymous Sub Pop debut and the Seattle boys already have a follow-up ready to hit the street with Keep In Mind Frankenstein.

Not much has changed from their debut, hushed vocals and instrumentation dominate "Oslo Novelist." If it's even possible, Grand Archives may be even more laid back than their Band of Horses brethren.

Keep In Mind Frankenstein is out 9/15 via Sub Pop.

Headlights "Get Going"

Apparently the new album is going to be a change of pace from the Champaign, Il group because of infighting. However, you wouldn't be able to tell it from their new song "Get Going." It's not a pop-rocker by any stretch, but, it's also not mired in glum. It's actually delightfully upbeat.

Their new album Wildlife is out soon via Polyvinyl. You can download the new single "Get Going" here and listen to it below.

Behind The Scenes of Backspacer

The greatness of the Pearl Jam are showing us what it's like behind the scenes as they recorded their new album Backspacer. Check out the 10 minute mini-documentary.
