Mos Dub

After hitting it out of the park last year with Jaydiohead, then whiffing with Jaydiohead: Encore and Doublecheck Your Head, Max Tannone is back and hit a triple and is rounding the bag for home with Mos Dub.

Yeppers, Mr. Tannone has mashed up up Mos Def with dub Reggae and the effect come together like chocolate and peanut butter. There isn't a missed opportunity on the 10 tracks. If you're uninitiated with Mos, there is no better way to get to know him. If you know him, get to know him in a different way.

Mysplice 09

It's that time once again when to good folks over at Stereogum unleash their bastard pop hell on the rest of the world. Mysplice 4 is once again helmed by team9 as he mashes up the best indie from 09 with the best songs of days gone by. Right now, I'm diggin' the Doors vs. Bat For Lashes "Riders Sleep Alone" and Phoenix vs. The Cure "Phoenix Get Cured." Denton ex-pat Alan Palomo gets in on the action as his Neon Indian project gets mashed with the Pixies.

Check out the whole album below.

Gutterth Compilation 2

It's hard to explain to someone who lives outside of the DFWd area exactly how great the music scene is around here... particularly in Denton. Now the explaining can get a little bit of help with the Gutterth Compilation 2.

It features tons of local artists like our SubEx buddy Cory Graves band Mount Righteous, a favorite of ours Sarah Jaffe, RTB2, Ryan Thomas Becker, Shiny Around The Edges and literally dozens more.

Doug Burr's bring-you-to-tears excellence of "Mirror Ball" is an instant goldmine find for me. But, I've got to give it up that my favorite Jaffe song "Black Hoax Lie" is featured on the comp as well. Good choice fellas.

You can download the sprawling two album set right here... tomorrow. However, if you would like a hard copy of the compilation you can get it at Good Records.

Pet Lions In Fall

Like Rooney before them, Chicagoland's Pet Lions have a particularly sunny sound. But, unlike their California colleagues they have more to sing about than how bad it sucks getting beat up at beach parties, water polo teams and love. Oh wait, I think I'm confusing Rooney with The O.C., bitch. Rooney did have a sunny sound, but, it seemed they were just a one-trick-pony.

Pet Lions do have similarities to Rooney as far as the sunny sound goes, but, that's really where the comparison stops. The music that is made is more pop than California-pop. Think Spoon mixed with Rooney and you might be close. One thing that is for sure, Soft Right isn't an album that you're just going to skip through. Pet Lions catch your ear from the first note and compel you to keep on listening without skipping ahead.

If you go to their website, here, you can download their EP Soft Right fo' free.

Trot Along WIth Adam Arcuragi

Several months ago we told you about Splice.com's folk album they put out. On that album, Adam Arcuragi was featured with his take on the stunning "Ain't No Grave." Now the deep voiced folkie is featured over at Daytrotter and continues to amaze.

I highly recommend at least visiting the site and listening to "Broken Throat."

Jaydiohead Brings The Encore

After the excellent first Jaydiohead album that came out earlier this year Max Tannone has just put out his follow-up, Jaydiohead: The Encore. Unlike his first effort, this one is a little more subdued and slowed down compared to the urgency of his first album.

You can get The Encore as a free download here... and if you haven't already downloaded Jaydiohead, I highly suggest you get it.

The Cool Kids Go Fishing

With the new era of the music industry in full swing a lot of artists have taken to releasing their singles, albums and mixtapes for free online.  It's a good way to get free publicity since most of their money is made from touring anyway.  No one has embraced this new model quite like The Cool Kids.  They only have one EP to their name and a slew of singles that have been released for free via blogs.  Today they release their newest mixtape Gone Fishing to keep their name out there.

It's what you would expect from The Cool Kids, hard 808 beats and off-kilter rhymes.

You can download Gone Fishing here.

Zooey Is The Fabric of My Life

I didn't realize that the cotton industry was putting on such a big push to rework their classic jingle.  You know, the "Fabric of Our Lives" jingle?  Classic.  I still find myself singing that jingle from time to time.  Mostly because I'm a dork, but, also because it's easy to get stuck in your head and has such a great vocal melody.

Zooey Deschanel has recorded her version for a new commercial.  Just like with She & Him, she has such a sweet, twangy voice.  AND she has also recorded an extended version for a free download, who knew?!

NIN/JA Tour Sampler

Trent Reznor is a master marketer for the new millennium.  He did all the free flash drive stuff a few years ago, gave away albums and continues to do so.  For the upcoming tour with Jane's Addiction and Street Sweeper he has put up this tour sampler for free.

Of course you have to fill something out, but, it's prolly worth it because he's always giving away free shit.

Track listing:

Jane's Addiction - Chip Away
Nine Inch Nails - Not So Pretty Now
Jane's Addiction - Whores
Nine Inch Nails - Non-Entity
Street Sweeper - The Oath

Minipop Daytrotter Session

I was pleasantly surprised today when I checked out the ol' Daytrotter.  You may remember we interviewed San Francisco's Minipop last month and they just did a session this week.  So, it's nice to see that Daytrotter is riding BFD's coat tails.  I really think it's about time that someone did.

The good part about their particular session is that of the four songs they recorded, three are unreleased tracks, including their take on The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots,  Pt. 1."  If you like the original version, imagine slowing it down and adding a splash of more melancholy.

You can download the whole session here.  Enjoy!

Mysplice 3

Yep, the good folks over at Stereogum have released their annual mashup collabo with Team9.  At first blush I wasn't to hot on it, but, then I got to listening to the tracks are there are a few really good ones.  "Lockdown Shelter" the Rolling Stones vs. Kanyain't is good, "Britney Get's Bloc-ed," "Debbie Does Montreal" and "Albert and Katy Sitting In A Tree" are also good.

So, you can download it for free here.

You Like Free Stuff Music, Right?

Conor Oberst and the label he founded, Team Love, has taken a novel approach to getting their music to the masses.  They've opened up portions of their music library for free download, in part to circumvent music piracy.

Every month (or so) they will offer up selections from their library including entire albums, B-sides and live recordings.  This approach takes the notion of "pay what you want" and not only turns in on it's ear but kicks it out the door.  Normally, most Indie labels will at least offer free downloads of singles, but, to offer an entire album is quite something else (obviously).

All you have to do is go to their website and register for a "library card" which is giving them your email and setting a user name and password.  After your set, you can get any of the offerings they have for the month (or so).  Before you wonder how the label is going to make any money--the albums have already been release prior to being offered for free.

I've already taken advantage and downloaded Rabbit Fur Coat by Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins.  I always meant to pick that album up but never did.  Listening to it now, I know why I should've picked it up earlier.
