School of Seven Bells Get Deluxe

Dallas related School of Seven Bells are getting there stunning 2008 debut Alphinisms re-released with the deluxe treatment. The album will feature nine extra tracks of remixes, alternate versions, demos and live cuts y'all.

The alternate version of "Iamundernodisguise" is a little pointless. Gone is the buzzy, dreamland visions and replaced with a de-buzzed, de-glitched version... completely toned down but not completely reworked. Everything that, for me, makes the song great (aside from the vocals) has been pushed to the back to showcase the dreamy vocals. Only, it doesn't work as well for me... I prefer the original version.

MP3: School of Seven Bells - Iamundernodisguise (alternate version)

Pet Lions In Fall

Like Rooney before them, Chicagoland's Pet Lions have a particularly sunny sound. But, unlike their California colleagues they have more to sing about than how bad it sucks getting beat up at beach parties, water polo teams and love. Oh wait, I think I'm confusing Rooney with The O.C., bitch. Rooney did have a sunny sound, but, it seemed they were just a one-trick-pony.

Pet Lions do have similarities to Rooney as far as the sunny sound goes, but, that's really where the comparison stops. The music that is made is more pop than California-pop. Think Spoon mixed with Rooney and you might be close. One thing that is for sure, Soft Right isn't an album that you're just going to skip through. Pet Lions catch your ear from the first note and compel you to keep on listening without skipping ahead.

If you go to their website, here, you can download their EP Soft Right fo' free.

Headlights Wildlife Preview

Reading that the new Headlights album was a "struggle" and that the band had scrapped their previous studio work on the album and started over again was a bit disheartening. Especially since the band was saying it was a darker album... I was a bit hesitant when listening to the new album.

While the album still employs similar sensibilities of Some Racing, Some Stopping it's still enough for fans of the group to easily latch onto the record. However, where Some Racing, Some Stopping had an upbeat, summer time feeling running throughout the album, Wildlife goes into the opposite direction as their fall album.

The album isn't a bummer, but, it's definitely a chillout album. Gone are the hopeful tones of dual singers Erin Fein and Tristan Wraight, replaced by mid-to-down-tempo numbers that reflect the difficult times they faced while recording Wildlife.

Again, that isn't to say the album is a downer. "I Don't Mind At All" and lead single "Get Going" reflect the tone of the album has the poppy sound you've come to expect from Headlights, the lyrics and vocals just don't sound too happy.

Headlight will play Denton's Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio November 19.

Yeah, They Local

While family drama kept me away from the Telegraph Canyon's in-store this weekend, it hasn't kept me away from listening to the delightfully, acoustically, folk-ally sounds of Denton's Seryn... who were the show openers.

Imagine if you will Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes getting together and starting a band. You would have more than just an animal band, you would have one hell of a twang-folk band. Granted, their total output thus far, or at least what they've posted on their Myspace page, is two songs. However, from those two songs it's evident the band has the talent to garner a nice little fan base. But, hell, they're from Denton, so this time next year they may just be the biggest thing since Midlake.

Trot Along WIth Adam Arcuragi

Several months ago we told you about Splice.com's folk album they put out. On that album, Adam Arcuragi was featured with his take on the stunning "Ain't No Grave." Now the deep voiced folkie is featured over at Daytrotter and continues to amaze.

I highly recommend at least visiting the site and listening to "Broken Throat."

Remix An Earthquake

I love me some good remixes, and this one from Yes Giantess has made my day. The supporting act for Little Boots tour remixed her song "Earthquake" and they turned in quite a stunner. It has some progressive house elements, but, it doesn't go too far into clubland... just enough to get you off.

Telegraph Canyon will play another free in-store at Good Records, this Sunday. Things get kicked off at 4pm with Denton's own Seryn kicking off the festivities.

Hope For Sons of Hermann

I didn't know if Hope Sandoval was going to come to Dallas to support her new album. But, the good folks over at Spune pulled off another great show for the DFWd'ers as she will play Sons of Hermann Hall on October 19. You can get more info here.

Everybody Chill

There are times when downtempo electronica and chill out has all the appeal of a walking down the street during a thunder storm. It's not often that you can find something that is captivating enough to listen through a whole song or album like their house music cousins.

Seattle's Lucine gets his recipe right by filling the sing with just the right mixture of blips and beeps, vocal edits and atmospheric qualities. His work is similar to that of UK producer Burial, choppy beats and synths that actually garner an emotional response.

Ian Brown Stellifies

Ian Brown continues to release stunning music that moves as far from his former band The Stone Roses as possible. "Stellify" lives up to his more recent release, Solarize, with it's feel feel and chipper mood. The track is dominated by nothing but a clunky piano loop, drums and some horns thrown in for good measure. As minimal as the music is, it fits Brown and his studio magic aided voice. It's as pleasing to my ears as it is to my heart to hear the King Monkey continuing to make music that is great.

The Stellify EP is only available on European iTunes and I'm sure his album (once available) will only be available as an import. But, with his track record of making great album, I may as well get ready to plop down $30 for one album.

Used Strings Make Good Things

In an interesting twist on supporting local music and the Carter Albrect Music Foundation, Eye On The Sparrow Design's has come up with an interesting way to help you look good and help out a good cause.

Eye On The Sparrow Designs takes used bass and guitar strings from local musicians and turns them into bracelets and earrings. 25% of all sales go to the Carter Albrect Music Foundation. So, if you're a musician, please donate to the cause (you don't need old strings anyway, right?). Or, just go to the website and check out the pieces and purchase something.

Calypso

Time to take you for a ride in my casually sad Mercedes. I was drawn to this song initially because of the title. With a title like that it had to be pretty good, right? Turns out the answer is yes. Calypso make rock that is more Chuck Berry-meets-the Pixies than anything else. Good guitar driven rock.

Stellastarr*... Live-ish

Since it seems the NYC quartet will not be coming to The D anytime soon, here is the closest thing we (I) can get, their performance of "Graffiti Eyes" from the Highline Ballroom in New York City... get a rope.

100 Damned Guns Track By Track

Our good friend, Cindy Chaffin, should be happy with this one... at least I am. Paul Slavens featured Ft. Worth's 100 Damned Guns on his latest installment of Track By Track. The Guns deserve it, they are a fantastic band and double that for their live show. So... double fantastic?

You can listen to the podcast below or... you can listen to it here. More importantly buy their album Musica de Tormento here.

B-Boy Double Dutch

Max Tannone is a man that doesn't know when to stop. He released the spectacular Jaydiohead mashup album earlier in the year, then followed it up a few months ago with another Jaydiohead album. Now he's dropping the Doublecheck Your Head, the Beastie Boys remixed with the Beastie Boys.

It's not a bad effort, just nothing is grabbing me as much as the first Jaydiohead did. Although, "Booty Groove" is pretty good. But, maybe you will find something you like.

Save The Last Dance For The ER

The Raveonettes new song "Last Dance" is possibly the sweetest song about someone overdosing ever. If you were not really paying attention you would think it's a really sweet love song (and it kinda is). But, it's a promising start to their new album.
